SOON AFTER moving to our new building at Lavinia House, plans were being made to convert the muddy, grassed area to a lawn with flower borders.
Designing and digging started in February 2008 with planting soon after, as warmer weather arrived, we began to see colourful flowers growing. With much care and attention it bloomed into a lovely garden, winning Silver prize in the Horsham in Bloom contest that year.
It is very pleasant to sit on the terrace, in the sun, to enjoy the colours or to wander round trying to identify plants. Several members spend a lot of their time planting, weeding, watering and dead-heading. We are grateful for their interest and efforts.
In early 2009, plans were put forward for a greenhouse and shed to be erected on adjoining land, with the kind support of the manager of the neighbouring care home, Mill River Lodge.
No sooner had work started on this than, Chris Burns, a local garden designer, offered the garden that he had exhibited at Hampton Court Flower Show.
The plants, wooden walkways and the planters that together formed a Tudor Rose, the theme of the garden, were delivered to us and all we had to do was reconstruct it!
A week later we heard that the original garden had won GOLD prize in the Horsham in Bloom 2009 contest. At the presentation event in October, we were also awarded an unexpected ‘Certificate of Excellence’ by South & South-East in Bloom.
. . . now we await the results of the Horsham in Bloom 2010 judging . . .
